ServiceM8 costs between $0 and $349 a month in New Zealand as at July 2026. It charges on the number of jobs you create each month, not on how many staff you have, and every paid plan includes unlimited logins. Most small NZ trade businesses land on $29 or $79 a month.
That per-job model is the whole story. Get your job count wrong and you will either overpay for months or get bumped up a tier in the middle of your busiest week. So the numbers first, then what they mean.
ServiceM8 pricing in NZD, plan by plan
Five plans, all NZD, read off servicem8.com/nz/pricing on 25 July 2026. Vendors change plans without warning, so check the page before you commit to anything.
| Plan | NZD per month | Jobs a month | Staff logins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 30 | 1 |
| Starter | $29 | 50 | Unlimited |
| Growing | $79 | 150 | Unlimited |
| Premium | $149 | 500 | Unlimited |
| Premium Plus | $349 | 1,500 and up | Unlimited |
There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card required, and the free plan is permanent rather than a trial that expires.
Then there are the running costs that sit outside the subscription line. These are the ones that surprise people on the second invoice, because they scale with how you actually work.
| Extra | What it costs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Included SMS | 100 to 3,000 a month | Rises with your plan, none on Free |
| Extra SMS | 10c a message | Automated reminders eat this fast |
| Card payments | 2.49 to 3.10 per cent plus 30c | Best rate on Premium and above |
| Extra jobs | 20c a job | Published on Premium Plus only |
Two things worth flagging on that table. Automated reminders and on-my-way texts are the best part of ServiceM8 for a service business, and they are also the reason a busy month adds $30 or $40 of SMS you did not plan for. And the card payment rate improves as you go up the plans, so a business processing a lot of card payments recovers some of a plan upgrade on merchant fees.
One honest gap: ServiceM8’s NZ pricing page says prices are in NZD but does not state whether GST is included, as at July 2026. Tradify says plainly that its prices exclude GST. Budget as though both are plus GST and check your first invoice.
What the job-based pricing model means for a busy month
It means your bill tracks your workload, not your headcount, and that cuts both ways. A job is a job record you create in ServiceM8 that month. Ten short call-outs is ten jobs. One four-month bathroom renovation is one job.
For a high-volume service business that is brilliant. Four people on the tools running 130 jobs a month all sit inside the $79 Growing plan, with no extra licence to buy when you take on a fifth person. For a builder doing six long jobs a year it is almost free, but you are also not getting much for the money, because the tool is not built for staged work.
The problem is the ceiling. ServiceM8 publishes an additional-job charge of 20c only on Premium Plus, so on Starter, Growing and Premium a month that runs past your allowance means moving up a plan. Confirm the exact behaviour with ServiceM8 before you cut it fine, because the plan you pick on a quiet April is not the plan that survives a storm week in July.
Count your jobs in your worst month, not your average month. That is the plan you are actually buying.
Here is what that looks like across four real shapes of NZ trade business.
| Your business | Jobs a month | Plan | NZD per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo sparky, service work | 40 | Starter | $29 |
| Three-van plumbing crew | 130 | Growing | $79 |
| Two-person maintenance outfit | 400 | Premium | $149 |
| Eight staff, high-volume service | 1,200 | Premium | $149 |
Note the last two rows. Eight staff on 1,200 jobs a month pays the same $149 as two people on 400 jobs, because staff are free and jobs are not. If your headcount is bigger than your job count, ServiceM8 is very hard to beat on price. If it is the other way around, it is worth checking a per-user tool before you assume otherwise.
Seasonal trades should plan to move plans twice a year rather than sitting on the higher tier through winter. Roofers, landscapers and pool servicing businesses in the Bay of Plenty all have a shape to their year, and paying Premium in July for a summer job volume is money straight out the door.
ServiceM8 vs Tradify pricing side by side
ServiceM8 is cheaper for teams, Tradify is cheaper for one or two people doing lots of jobs. Tradify Pro is $52 NZD per user per month excluding GST with unlimited jobs on every plan, and Lite and Plus sit at $48 and $62 per user (tradifyhq.com/nz/pricing, as at July 2026).
Annualised, because a $100 monthly difference is $1,200 a year and that is the number that actually matters.
| Your business | ServiceM8 a year | Tradify Pro a year | Cheaper by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo, 40 jobs a month | $348 | $624 | ServiceM8, $276 |
| 3 staff, 120 jobs a month | $948 | $1,872 | ServiceM8, $924 |
| 5 staff, 300 jobs a month | $1,788 | $3,120 | ServiceM8, $1,332 |
| 2 staff, 400 jobs a month | $1,788 | $1,248 | Tradify, $540 |
All NZD. ServiceM8 figures are the plan price times twelve, Tradify figures are the per-user price times headcount times twelve, excluding GST.
Price is not the only line though, and I will not pretend it is. The full ServiceM8 app is iOS only, and Android staff get ServiceM8 Lite, which is built for technicians who just need to see their jobs. Tradify runs a full app on iPhone, Android and web. If your crew is on Android phones and you are not about to buy everyone an iPhone, Tradify is very likely the right answer regardless of what the annual figures say. The full three-way comparison including Fergus is in ServiceM8 vs Tradify vs Fergus.
What setup and training costs on top
A one-off cost if someone does it for you, or a handful of evenings if you do it yourself. Plenty of tradies do it themselves and it works out fine. What does not work out fine is signing up, importing nothing, and still writing quotes in Word six months later.
Whoever does it, the work is the same list, and it is separate from your subscription:
| What you get | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Job templates, badges and workflow set up for your trade | The app matches how you actually work, so the crew uses it |
| Quote and invoice layouts, plus your price list loaded | Quotes go out from site the same day |
| On-site forms, checklists and certificates | The paperwork gets done before you leave the job |
| Xero or MYOB sync, and card payments switched on | Invoices and payments stop being re-keyed |
| Data migration from your old system | Client records, quotes and job history move across |
| Team training, then support while it beds in | The part that decides whether it sticks |
| 15-minute intro call | Free |
What it costs comes down to how much history moves across and how many people need training. A solo operator starting clean is a small job. A five-person business coming off Tradify with three years of client records, a materials list and half-finished quotes is a bigger one. Book a free 15-minute call, tell us which of those you are, and you will get a straight number. What the scope covers is set out on the ServiceM8 setup and training page, along with what migrates and what does not.
Is ServiceM8 worth what it costs?
On the maths, easily, if you actually use it. The $79 Growing plan across 150 jobs is 53c a job. One quote sent the same afternoon instead of three days later covers a year of that, and one invoice you forgot to send covers several years of it.
Where it stops being worth it is the part nobody says out loud. The most common thing I see on an audit is a business paying $149 a month and using about a third of the product. Badges off, forms never built, online booking switched off, no automated follow-up. That is not a pricing problem and upgrading will not fix it. Use what you already pay for first.
Two other honest limits. ServiceM8 will not get you work. It fixes slow quotes, forgotten jobs and unpaid invoices, which is worth real money, but a quiet phone is a marketing problem. And if your work is long staged builds with variations and progress claims, the per-job model gives you almost nothing and Fergus or NextMinute will serve you better.
If you want the numbers checked against your actual job count, the 15-minute call is free and you will get a straight answer, including stay where you are if that is the right one. Everything we do around ServiceM8, including migrations off Tradify and Fergus, is on the ServiceM8 setup and support page.
