Website design for small businesses that need to win work
Horton Taylor builds lead-generating websites for small businesses across New Zealand, mostly trades and cleaning companies. A standard site goes live in three to four weeks and every build is fast, mobile-first and structured so local searchers find you and enquire. Book a free 15-minute call and you get a straight number for your build, not a proposal to decode.
As a small business, your website should be your hardest-working salesperson. We build fast, lead-focused sites that get found on Google and turn visitors into paying customers.
Big agencies quote five figures and treat a small business like a small account
Your DIY site builder ate three weekends and it still looks like a template
Plumbers, sparkies and cleaners with worse reviews outrank you on Google
You have a business to run and no time to become a web expert
Website design for small business, built around getting enquiries
A small business website has one job: turn someone already looking for a painter or a carpet cleaner into a phone call, a form or a booking. What you do, where you do it and roughly what it costs has to be answerable in the first ten seconds.
We build to that standard first and make it look good second. Pages ship as static HTML rather than a stack of plugins, and the full method is on our website design and optimisation page.
Static pages, so the site stays fast as you keep adding services
Under two seconds to load on a phone on mobile data
A tappable phone number at the top of every screen, not buried on a contact page
One buyer and one decision per page, instead of a brochure that talks to everyone
Real photos of your work and your reviews placed where the decision gets made
Why $599 small business website designs end up costing more
A $599 website is a template with your logo dropped in. That is not a con, it is a different product. What is not in the price is anyone thinking about how your customers search, what your service pages should be called, or why your quote form is being abandoned.
The real cost turns up later. You pay again in twelve months when the site has produced nothing, then again in ad spend to cover for it. Two extra jobs a month pays for the whole build in most trades, and how much a website costs in NZ has the market rates.
Mitch runs every account personally from Mount Maunganui.
How long does website design for a small business take?
Three to four weeks for a standard small business site, counted from the day we have your photos, your service list and any copy you already have. Larger builds with online payments or bookings take six to eight weeks.
Your side of it is about two hours: one call, one round of feedback on the copy, and one look through the staging site on your own phone. We do not promise fifteen days, because the slow part is deciding what the pages should say, not building them.

Website developers for small business, or one person who does the lot?
Most small businesses do not need a developer. They need one person who can work out what the site should say, build it, and still pick up the phone six months later.
That is what this is. Mitch scopes the site, writes it, builds it, wires up the tracking and handles the changes afterwards, and he has owned and run service businesses himself. If you already have a developer and only want the structure and copy handled, say so on the call.
Local marketing done properly.

Website design for small businesses anywhere in New Zealand
We work with small service businesses New Zealand wide, from sparkies to commercial cleaning outfits. Everything after the first call runs over video, email and a shared staging link, which is how most builds already run.
Being outside a main centre is usually an advantage. Local search competition in a smaller town is thinner, so a properly structured site can start ranking in months instead of years. It is the same build we run for web design in Tauranga.
More booked jobs, less guesswork.

Small business website design versus a DIY site builder
You can build a site yourself on a drag-and-drop builder, or get AI to generate one in an afternoon. If your budget is genuinely a couple of hundred dollars, do that rather than nothing at all. What those tools will not do is decide anything for you.
They will not tell you that your homepage is competing with your own service page, that five services need five pages, or that nobody enquires because the form asks for eleven fields. If your site is already quiet, the usual causes are in why your website is not getting enquiries.

A real number and a fixed page list before anything starts
How it works
Our website design process
01
Free 15-minute call
A short call to work out what you sell, who buys it and what a good month looks like. No pitch deck and no proposal you have to decode.
02
Scope and fixed price
You get the page list, the timeline and one number before anything starts. No setup fee that appears at the end, and nothing that changes at invoice time.
03
Copy, build, review
The structure and copy get written first and you approve them, then the site is built on staging where you can click through it on your own phone.
04
Launch and measure
We point the domain, check every form and conversion fires properly, then watch which pages produce enquiries and keep improving from there.
Where we work
Areas we serve
Mitch works from Mount Maunganui, just across the harbour from Tauranga, and builds for small businesses right across New Zealand. Everything after the first call runs over video and a shared staging link, so where you are makes no difference to the build.
SWISH had 100+ 5-star Google reviews and strong word-of-mouth, but the website was cluttered, slow on mobile and didn't separate commercial from residential offerings. The site felt less professional than the actual service, and organic traffic for searches like "house washing near me" wasn't converting the way it should.
What we did
Ran a discovery and strategy phase to map out the right structure for commercial and residential customers.
Designed a fresh, conversion-focused website built around real reviews and before-and-after imagery.
Built dedicated service pages for softwash, roof moss treatment, water blasting and gutter vacuuming, each with tailored quote forms.
What happened
A faster, mobile-first site that finally reflects the quality of the work
Clear separation between commercial and residential service pages
Tailored quote forms for each service driving cleaner, higher-intent leads
Improved local SEO foundations targeting "house washing near me" style searches
"I couldn't recommend Mitch and Erin highly enough. They have been super helpful for our business and supporting us with marketing, ServiceM8 and our website. They were really responsive and efficient. Will continue to use them again."

Questions we get about website design for small businesses
What does a small business website cost in NZ?
What moves the number is the page count, whether every service needs its own page, how much copywriting is involved and whether you need payments or bookings. It is not how big your logo file is, and it is not how many stakeholders sat in the kickoff. A build here includes the copy, the search structure, the forms and the conversion tracking, plus hosting and small changes afterwards on a monthly care plan. Book a free 15-minute call and you get one straight number for your scope. For what the NZ market charges generally, read how much a website costs in NZ.
My current site gets traffic but no enquiries. Can you fix that instead of rebuilding?
Often yes, and it is usually cheaper. We keep the pages already earning traffic, fix the structure, speed and forms, and rewrite the parts that are not converting. Start with why your website is not getting enquiries, then book a call and we will tell you straight whether a fix or a rebuild is the better spend.
Is website designing for small business different to a big-company build?
Yes, in what gets cut. A small business build skips the brand workshops, the stakeholder rounds and the custom CMS, and puts the money into search structure, copy and conversion instead. The process is the same one on our website design and optimisation page, run at small business scope.
Do you have website designs for small business owners who sell products online?
Yes. Ecommerce and booking builds cost more than a lead-gen site, because payments, product data and dispatch rules all need wiring up and testing before launch. If you only sell a handful of items, we will often say to start with the lead-gen site and add the shop once the traffic justifies it. Either way you get the number for both options on the first call.
I am a one-person business. Is a proper website overkill?
No. Most of our clients are owner-operators. A site that brings in two extra jobs a month pays for itself inside a year in almost every trade, and it keeps working while you are on the tools. Get the build number on the first call, put it next to the margin on two jobs a month, and the decision makes itself. The businesses that struggle with this are the ones who paid a few hundred dollars for something that produces nothing.
Do you build for small businesses outside the Bay of Plenty?
Yes, right across New Zealand. Mitch is in Mount Maunganui, but the build runs over video calls and a shared staging link, so where you are does not change the quote or the timeline. See website design for how a build is set up from end to end.
Who owns the site and the domain once it is live?
You do. The domain stays in your name, the site is yours, and if you ever want to move it elsewhere you can take it with you. The care plan covers hosting, backups, updates and small changes, and it is separate from ownership of the site itself.
Who actually does the work?
Mitch does, from the first call to the changes you ask for a year later. No account managers, no offshore teams, and nobody handing your project to a junior once the deposit clears.
