WordPress web design in Tauranga, plus rescues for slow existing sites

Horton Taylor does WordPress web design in Tauranga and across New Zealand. New builds include training so you can edit the site yourself, and slow or broken existing WordPress sites get audited and fixed rather than rebuilt for the sake of it. Everything is scoped as one fixed price first, off a free 15-minute call.

There are two jobs here: building WordPress sites for trade and cleaning businesses that need to win work, and rescuing the slow, plugin-heavy sites that have quietly stopped bringing in enquiries.

Mitch, founder of Horton Taylor

Sound familiar?

Your WordPress site takes five seconds to load on a phone and you have no idea why

Whoever built it has gone quiet, and you cannot get into the admin to change a phone number

It runs 27 plugins, half of them out of date, and something breaks every few months

Painters, plumbers and window cleaners with worse reviews outrank you in Tauranga

WordPress web design built around getting enquiries

  • A page for every service you sell, plus service-area wording for the suburbs you want work from
  • Appears in under two seconds on a phone on mobile data, and still does two years later
  • Your real photos and Google reviews where the decision gets made, not on a testimonials page
  • Click-to-call in the header, quote forms on every service page, tested on a real handset
  • A small, deliberate plugin list instead of whatever the theme demo shipped with
  • Conversion tracking wired up on day one so you can see which pages produce enquiries

Rescuing a slow or broken WordPress site

  • Speed audit on a real phone on mobile data, with the actual culprits named
  • Plugin cleanup, so you are not running four things that do the same job
  • Images compressed and resized, which is where most local sites lose their load time
  • Hero photos cut down from 4MB straight-off-a-phone files to something mobile data can handle
  • Forms, tracking and Google Business Profile links tested and fixed
  • Core, theme and plugin updates brought current without breaking the layout

Training so you can edit your own WordPress site

  • Recorded handover session covering the edits you will genuinely make
  • Plain-English cheat sheet for prices, photos, phone numbers and new pages
  • Reusable blocks and locked templates so a text paste cannot wreck the layout
  • Admin logins in your name, and the site stays yours if you ever move on

What you get

  • A WordPress build or rescue scoped as one fixed price before anything starts
  • A lean theme and a short, deliberate plugin list, so the site is still fast in two years
  • A page per service and service-area wording for the suburbs you want work from
  • Copywriting done for you, written the way your customers describe the job
  • Recorded training and a cheat sheet so you can edit prices, photos and pages yourself
  • Forms, conversion tracking and Google Analytics tested before launch, then watched afterwards

What that means for you

A site that loads fast and turns existing traffic into enquiries

Control of your own website instead of chasing whoever built it

One person who knows your setup and picks up the phone

How it works

Our website design process

  1. 01

    Free 15-minute call

What you sell, which suburbs you want work from, and whether you already have a WordPress site worth saving. No pitch deck and no discovery fee.

  2. 02

Audit or scope, with one number

An existing site gets audited for speed, plugins, forms and tracking. A new build gets a page list and a timeline. Either way you get one fixed price before anything starts.

  3. 03

    Build or fix, then test

Copy written and approved first, then the build or the cleanup happens on staging. Every form, every tracking event and every page gets tested on a real phone before it goes live.

  4. 04

Train you, then look after it

A recorded handover session so you can edit the site yourself, then a monthly care plan covering updates, backups and small changes if you would rather not.

How this played out for SWISH Property Services

SWISH Property Services
100+
5-star Google reviews · 2025

SWISH had 100+ 5-star Google reviews and strong word-of-mouth, but the website was cluttered, slow on mobile and didn't separate commercial from residential offerings. The site felt less professional than the actual service, and organic traffic for searches like "house washing near me" wasn't converting the way it should.

What we did

  • Ran a discovery and strategy phase to map out the right structure for commercial and residential customers.
  • Designed a fresh, conversion-focused website built around real reviews and before-and-after imagery.
  • Built dedicated service pages for softwash, roof moss treatment, water blasting and gutter vacuuming, each with tailored quote forms.

What happened

  • A faster, mobile-first site that finally reflects the quality of the work
  • Clear separation between commercial and residential service pages
  • Tailored quote forms for each service driving cleaner, higher-intent leads
  • Improved local SEO foundations targeting "house washing near me" style searches

Questions we get about website design in Tauranga

How much does a WordPress website cost in New Zealand?

Two things move a WordPress quote: how many services need their own page, and whether you need anything custom like a booking or membership plugin. A new build includes the copy, the lean theme and plugin list, the forms, conversion tracking and the recorded training that lets you edit the site yourself. Cleanups and speed-ups on an existing site are cheaper again, and they get scoped as one fixed price after the audit so you know the total before work starts. Hosting, backups, plugin updates and small changes run on a monthly care plan. Book a free 15-minute call and you get the number for your job. For the wider market picture, read how much a website costs in NZ.

Can you fix my slow WordPress site instead of rebuilding it?

Usually yes, and it is nearly always the cheaper option by a wide margin. The usual culprits are uncompressed images, a heavy page builder, duplicate caching plugins and a plugin list nobody has pruned in three years. We audit first, tell you what is actually costing you the seconds, then fix that for a fixed price you agree before work starts. A rebuild only gets recommended when the theme is abandoned or the site is one long page that cannot rank for your separate services. If it gets traffic but no enquiries, why your website is not getting enquiries covers the most common reasons.

Will I be able to edit the site myself?

Yes, and that is the point of building on WordPress. Training is part of the build: a recorded screen-share covering prices, photos, phone numbers, new service pages and checking enquiries, plus a plain-English cheat sheet. The editing screens are built with reusable blocks and locked templates so a pasted paragraph cannot wreck the layout. If you would rather text Mitch and have it done, the monthly care plan covers small changes.

Should I use WordPress or something else?

Use WordPress if you plan to publish and edit regularly yourself, need a proper blog, or need a plugin that does something specific. If your site is eight pages that change twice a year, a static build is faster and has nothing to keep updating, which is how most of our lead-generation sites get built. Compare against the standard build on web design in Tauranga or small business website design, then decide based on how you want to run it. We will not talk you off WordPress either: if you already have rankings and staff who know it, fixing it beats a migration that loses traffic.

I have lost access to my WordPress admin. Can you help?

Usually. Between the hosting account, the domain registrar and the database there is nearly always a way back in, and we have done this for owners whose previous developer stopped replying. Bring whatever you have, even if it is only the domain login and an old invoice. Once we are in, admin accounts get put in your name so it cannot happen again.

Do you work with businesses outside Tauranga?

Yes, right across New Zealand. Mitch is in Mount Maunganui, so Tauranga and the Mount get in-person meetings, and everywhere else runs over video and a shared staging link. Where you are does not change the quote or the timeline. Trade and cleaning businesses anywhere in the country are covered the same way on small business website design.

How long does a WordPress build take?

Three to four weeks for a standard build, counted from the day we have your photos, service list and reviews. A speed-up or cleanup on an existing site is usually a few days to a fortnight depending on what the audit finds. The part that slows projects down is almost always waiting on content, not the building, and you get the timeline before you commit. The end-to-end process is set out on our website design and optimisation page.

Is WordPress secure enough for a small business?

It is, as long as somebody keeps it current. Nearly every WordPress site that gets hacked was running an out-of-date plugin or an abandoned theme for months. That is why builds here use a short plugin list, and why the monthly care plan covers core, theme and plugin updates plus backups and monitoring. If nobody is going to maintain it, say so early and we will build you something with less to maintain.
